I think that it is a positive experience for me and Sharnay [her daughter] because she’s an only child, so when me and her come to these events together, first of all it helps me and her bond because we’re doing things together as a mother and a daughter. Before she was a part of YTA she would do weekend activities with her friends and other relatives, and now she does activities with me. And also it helps her with socialzation and being with other kids. It also definitely helps in terms of being outside, being active, we like that she’s learning a sport and getting skills. It’s definitely built her confidence. *This review was collected on a site visit and entered by GreatNonprofits staff on behalf of the reviewer
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... I know it’s definitely had a great impact on the Hunter’s Point YTA. I see them really enjoying the activities and also it gives them a positive outlet on weekends to keep the busy and active. So I see my daughter’s YTA group as a whole accelerate in the program and outside of the program, like through the trips. The outing to Stanford to see Serena was a great experience.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... again, it gets her out of the house doing a positive activity on the weekends and its given us great access to the SF tennis club. Without YTA we wouldn’t have had access to a tennis club. And I love that Coach White does a lot of outreach in the community—he’s really proactive.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... very positive, very informative, and they give a lot of guidance. They give great pointers, like setting her up with a better tennis racket. Lots of personalized coaching.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Open up more sites for the students.
Ways to make it better!
- My experience would have been better if... More events with the children playing, practicing, getting to know each other better—having the different YTA groups practice together and interact more. And more sites—like using more courts throughout the city.
- If I ran this organization, I would... I would definitely make sure to recruit the children at a younger age, so that they can really grow and develop in the program. Also I’d make sure that the children have the opportunity to be junior coaches so that they can grow and eventually gain employment through the program.
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... funding.
- One thing I'd also say is that... Some sort of transportation assistance to help the students get to and from practices and tournaments
